Chapter Five: Becoming Marie Nicole
The End of One Era. The Beginning of Another.
In March of 2020, the wedding industry came to a complete stop. One by one, weddings were postponed. Venues closed their doors. Couples who had spent months, sometimes years, planning one of the happiest days of their lives suddenly didn't know if it would happen at all. Like everyone else, I had no idea what tomorrow was going to look like. For the first time in years... My calendar was quiet. The weekends that had always been filled with timelines, rehearsals, venue visits, and wedding days suddenly sat empty. The silence was unsettling. But it also gave me something I hadn't had in a very long time. Time to think. I kept going back to one question that had been following me since that Blue October concert in 2017. If life can change overnight... what am I waiting for? The funny thing is... My story with weddings didn't begin in 2020. It began almost 7 years earlier.
Fifteen years ago, I walked into one of my very first large weddings. To say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement. I was young. Nervous. Trying to make sure no one realized I was still figuring everything out. I remember looking around at all these seasoned professionals and wondering if I truly belonged there. One of those professionals was Sarah. Back then, she wasn't "Sarah from Sarandipity." She was simply one of the incredibly talented people I hoped I wouldn't disappoint. Looking back now, I don't think she ever saw the nervous planner standing in front of her. She saw possibility. She believed I had an eye for design. She trusted my instincts. She treated me like I belonged long before I felt like I did. And after that wedding... We kept finding ourselves working together. Again. And again. And again. Years passed. One wedding turned into dozens. Then hundreds. Without realizing it, we weren't just building weddings. We were building a friendship. This industry has a funny way of doing that. People only see the finished product. The beautiful ceremony. The flowers. The candlelight. The perfectly timed first dance. They don't see the twelve- and sixteen-hour days. The weekends away from your family. The holidays you miss. The late-night timeline revisions. The phone calls. The pressure. Or the emotional weight of carrying someone else's once-in-a-lifetime day as if it were your own.
Wedding planning isn't just a job. If you're not careful... It becomes your entire identity. And for a while... It became mine. I said yes to everything. Every wedding. Every meeting. Every opportunity. Because I loved it. I truly did. But somewhere along the way, I forgot something important. I had spent so much time helping other people celebrate their lives... That I had quietly stopped living my own. Sarah was one of the first people to gently remind me of that. After years of working together, she looked at me one day and reminded me that this industry will take everything you're willing to give it. Your weekends. Your evenings. Your holidays. Your energy. She told me something I've never forgotten. Make time for your own life before it's too late. At the time, I don't think I realized how much I needed to hear those words.
Today... I think about them often. They're the reason Anthony and I make time for date night. The reason I protect time with my family. The reason I finally learned that being busy isn't the same as being successful. So when the world unexpectedly stopped in 2020... I realized something. I had spent years building everyone else's dream days. Maybe it was finally time to build my own dream life.
Was I scared? Absolutely. Walking away from stability always feels terrifying. Building a business with your own name attached to it feels even scarier. But every time fear started to creep in...
I thought back to that concert. To that quiet voice asking me if I was truly living the life I wanted. The answer had become clear. It was finally time to stop wondering... And start building. Marie Nicole Weddings wasn't born because I wanted to own a business. It was born because I wanted to wake up every morning doing work that felt meaningful. Work that challenged me. Work that allowed me to love people through one of the biggest moments of their lives. And work that finally felt like it belonged to me. Looking back now... I don't think 2020 created my dream. I think it gave me the courage to finally choose it.
Tomorrow's chapter is about something I never expected. Because somewhere between chasing my dream and building a business... I met someone who quietly changed my life in all the best ways.
