Chapter Four: Wake Up
The End of One Era. The Beginning of Another.
There are moments in life that don't seem extraordinary while they're happening. They're just another night. Another drive. Another concert. Until years later, when you realize... That was the moment everything started to change. I've always loved live music. There's something about standing in a crowd of strangers, singing the same words together, that reminds you none of us are ever as alone as we think we are.
One night, I drove to see Blue October. By myself. That never bothered me. If there was a band I loved, I wasn't going to miss the opportunity just because no one else could go. About halfway through the show, Justin Furstenfeld stopped playing. The room grew quiet. He wasn't singing anymore. Pulls out a stool. Takes a seat and simply starts talking. He shared his story. About addiction. About sobriety. About looking in the mirror one day and finally saying,
"Enough."
Enough pretending. Enough surviving. Enough being the person he had become. It was time to wake up. His story wasn't my story. I wasn't battling addiction. But standing there in that crowd... It felt like every word was somehow meant for me. Not because we shared the same circumstances... But because we shared the same question.
Is this really the life I want to live?
I remember the tears just falling. Not the kind you try to hide. The kind you can't stop. It felt like something deep inside me had finally been given permission to speak. Almost as if someone had reached into my chest and whispered...
"Wake up."
For years, I had been moving from one chapter to the next, doing what I thought I was supposed to do. Working. Planning. Existing. But somewhere along the way... I had stopped asking myself what I actually wanted. That night didn't magically change my life. I didn't leave with all the answers. But I left with different questions. Questions I had been too afraid to ask before.
Who am I when no one else is telling me who I should be?
What kind of life would make me excited to wake up every morning?
What if I stopped living the life I thought I was supposed to have... and started creating the life I truly wanted?
I still have pieces of that night recorded on my phone. Every once in a while, I'll watch them again. Not because I need to remember the concert... But because I never want to forget the woman who walked into that venue... ...or the one who walked back out.
That night in 2017, I didn't leave the concert and quit my job the next morning. Life rarely changes that dramatically. I went back to work. I showed up the next day. Then the next. And the next. From the outside, nothing looked different. But inside... Everything was. Once you've asked yourself the hard questions, there's no pretending you never asked them. That quiet voice stayed with me. It showed up on my drive home from work. It whispered during long days at the mall. It reminded me, every single weekend, that there was one place I felt most like myself.
Weddings.
Every wedding I planned left me feeling something my day job never could.
Purpose.
I wasn't just organizing timelines or choosing linens. I was helping people celebrate one of the biggest days of their lives. I would leave every wedding exhausted... But somehow completely full. That's when I knew. This wasn't just something I loved. It was becoming the life I couldn't stop imagining. I didn't know it then... But life was about to hand me an opportunity I never saw coming. A chance to stop dreaming... and finally bet on myself.
Tomorrow, I'll tell you how a season of uncertainty became the beginning of Marie Nicole Weddings.
